56 Digital Nomad Visas for 2023

UPDATED AS OF JANUARY 2023

As more companies implement a permanent remote-work model, the digital nomad lifestyle continues to rise for millions of people.

But will that trend continue into 2023?

The Portuguese Government announced the introduction of a new visa for digital nomads, which came into force on the 30th of October 2022, allowing remote workers and/or self-employees to pursue their profession in Portugal.

And January 2023, Spain will officially enter the list of European countries offering Digital Nomad Visa programs to attract international talent to their economies.

The new visa — an element of the Startup Act law — was ratified by the plenary session of Spain’s congress of deputies and will permit people working remotely for foreign companies or for their own businesses to live in the country without needing a full work visa.

Competition is heating up among countries that want to attract international remote workers and that means digital nomad visas are likely to get more attractive in 2023.

What is a Digital Nomad Visa?

A digital nomad visa is a special type of visa for remote workers. It allows the holder to do their job from another country for an extended period. Many countries around the world have now introduced their own digital nomad visas to authorize this type of work activity. And these visas generally target workers who can perform their jobs from anywhere in the world

Most traditional visa options, such as tourist or business visas, did not cover remote work, while work visas are typically for those seeking employment with a company based in the country itself.

Digital nomad visas allow you to travel to another country and continue working remotely from there legally.

Note: Some Asian countries may not have special digital nomad or freelancer visas, but you can still take advantage of their long visa extensions. For example, the Philippines grants a 30-day tourist visa upon your entry, but this can be extended up to 3 years if you do the visa extension application at least 1 week prior to the expiration of your valid stay.

How do you get a digital nomad visa?

Applying for a digital nomad visa is no different from applying for a regular, nonresident visa for a particular country. It may require proof of income or employment, insurance, and the ability to provide for yourself and your dependents. There’s generally a minimum income level you must meet, and sometimes there’s a background check to see that you don’t have a record. You’ll also have to sign a statement saying you won’t be working for a local employer.

The application is more involved than a straightforward tourist visa, but the idea of digital nomad visas is to make it relatively easy for mobile workers to do their jobs from anywhere. After all, the countries encouraging these program

In most cases, you need to apply for the digital nomad visa at immigration (or occasionally online) in the country after arriving on a tourist visa and showing that you meet the criteria to obtain the visa.

How long does a digital nomad visa last?

The length of a digital nomad visa varies from country to country. On average, they last 12 months, but some are good for six or nine months. You can often extend your digital nomad visa.

What Is the Income Tax Situation with Digital Nomad Visas?

The tax situation with digital nomad visas is a complicated one. Some countries expect you to pay full tax, others have tax deductions or special rates, and some have zero taxes. The countries with digital nomad visas and zero tax assume you still pay tax in your home country and therefore they will not tax you. Almost all countries require you to have private health insurance and do not require you to pay social security benefits.

The Colombian visa rules are defined by resolutions made by the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Relations in Bogota, Colombia. The official Spanish version of the 2022 visa rules is defined in Resolution number 5477.

Digital nomads, remote workers and digital entrepreneurs of nationalities that do not require a short-stay visa, established by Resolution 5477. They will be able to enter without a visa and remain in Colombia with an Entry Permit granted by the immigration authority, in accordance with current regulations.

The validity of this visa is up to two (2) years and is a type V Visitors visa.  Please note that the digital nomad visa allows you to stay in Colombia for a maximum of 180 days or 6 months in a year.

There is an option to have beneficiaries. Your request is allowed for beneficiaries of the main owner. There are a few restrictions which are that this visa does not allow you to work or develop paid activity with a legal or natural person domiciled in the national territory.

It is important to note that the scope of the work you do as a digital nomad must be to provide remote work or telecommuting services, from Colombia, through digital media and the Internet, exclusively for foreign companies, as independent or labor-related, or to start a digital content or information technology venture of interest to the country.

Length of stay: up to 2 years

  • Passport Photocopy: A photocopy of the first page of your valid passport showing your biographical data. The photocopy can be either in color or black and white.
  • Proof of Legal Entry: A photocopy of the page of your passport showing last stamp of entry or departure of Colombia.
  • Letter from a Foreign Company: Letter in Spanish or English, issued by one or several foreign companies for which the foreigner provides his services, indicating the type of relationship and the type of remuneration received by the applicant. Visa Restrictions:

This visa is only valid for persons who may enter Colombia with a “tourist permission stamp”, which means you can enter through the airport with a stamp and no visa. Finally, in yellow the visa is clearly limited to a maximum of 180 days in a year. Exactly it reads “ Your period of stay can not be superior to 90 days and can be extended to a maximum of 180 days continuous or discontinuous in a calendar year.”

This is a common limit for many visitor visas. There is much misinformation from other visa agencies which only want to make money off of this visa. This is the official law. Again, this visitor visa limit in the last part of the paragraph is very common with other visitor visas. The dense legal terms are confusing but if you compare to other visitor visas you see the pattern and understand the limits.

Visa Fee: Between $170 and $230 USD

Required Proof of Income: To get approved, applicants must simply prove their income originates from a non-Colombian source, and that they meet their monthly earnings of at least USD $684, the lowest financial threshold out of any countries.

Country: Portugal

Visa: Portugal Digital Nomad Visa

Status: ACTIVE since October 2022

Description:

From 30 October 2022, under the new Portugal Digital Nomad Visa program, you can now live and work in Portugal as a remote worker. The Portuguese government announced the Digital Nomad Visa earlier this year to allow digital nomads to stay or settle for a certain period in Portugal. Many countries now have Digital Nomad Visas, and the Portuguese version is very appealing.

The Portugal Digital Nomad Visa is for remote workers that are looking to work remotely from Portugal. The requirements are that the individual has to make four times the national minimum wage to live and work in the country, which amounts to around $2,750 (€2,836) per month.

Portugal’s Digital Nomad Visa is split into two categories. Remote workers can either apply for a temporary stay visa for up to one year or a residency visa that can then be renewed for up to five years. The two categories are very appealing, whether you are looking for a short-term temporary stay visa or are looking to obtain a residency visa and perhaps live longer in the country.

If you obtain a residency visa, after five years, you can apply for permanent residency and even Portuguese citizenship, provided that you fulfill all the requirements. With citizenship, you will have the right to live, work, and study in any European Union (EU) member country.

This visa type is a nice alternative to the D7 Visa (also referred to as the Portugal Passive Income Visa), which is ultimately a visa for passive income earners. Portugal’s Digital Nomad Visa provides an entire visa type focused on attracting remote workers and entrepreneurs to the country.

Concerning the application process, you can visit the Portuguese Consulate in your home country or at SEF (Portuguese immigration and border services) if you are already in Portugal. You will need to show proof of income (bank statements) for the past three months, tax residency documents, and either a contract of employment or proof that you are self-employed. The application process is relatively straightforward, whether you apply in your home country or at SEF.

Length of stay: 1 year, renewable for 2 years more

Visa Fee: When applying for the Portugal digital nomad visa you will pay the application fee and the fee for the initial residence permit. The Application fee will cost €180. You also need to pay €320 for the Initial Residence Permit.

Eligibility/Requirements :

To obtain the Digital Nomad Visa, these needs to fulfilled:

Step 1: Portuguese Tax Number and Opening a Portuguese Bank Account

To apply for the visa, individuals need to prove that they have sufficient means of subsistence in Portugal for the period of their stay. That means a Portuguese bank account, and consequently a Portuguese tax number, are both required.

A deposit of the minimum wage, multiplied by the number of months the individual is staying in Portugal, is then mandatory as evidence to the Portuguese Immigration Authorities.

Step 2: Collect Documentation

Gather all of the documents necessary to be submitted at the appointment at the Portuguese Consulate:

General documentation to request a visa

  • Proof of legal residency on the country where you are applying
  • Travel insurance covering necessary medical expenses
  • Return airline ticket
  • Criminal clearance record
  • Proof of accommodation in Portugal for the period of your stay
  • Proof of means of subsistence in Portugal
  • Specific documentation for the Digital Nomad Visa

In the situation of subordinate work, i.e., as an employee, one of the following documents is required:

  • Work contract; or,
  • Promise of work contract; or,
  • Declaration by employer confirming the labour link.
  • In the situation of independent professional activity, one of the following documents is required:
  • Contract of incorporation of company; or,
  • Contract of provision of services; or,
  • Written proposal of provision of services contract; or,
  • Document confirming the services to be provided to one or more entities.
  • Proof of average monthly income for each of the last three months, with a minimum monthly value, equivalent to four Portuguese monthly minimum wages.
  • Document confirming your tax residence.

Step 3: Legal Formalities

The next step is to make an appointment at the Portuguese Consulate, where a meeting will be organised to submit the documentation and collect biometric data for the Visa.

Step 4: Final Steps

After analysis of the application is complete, the Digital Nomad visa is issued for the period of the work contract, up to a maximum period of one year.

Required Proof of Income: Monthly stable income requirement: €2,820+ (along with at least €8,460 in savings if you’re applying with a dependent spouse or partner). The minimum earnings requirement will go up to €3,040 in 2023 (4 x €760).

Visa: Romania’s Digital Nomad Visa

Status: ACTIVE since December 2021

Description:

The digital nomad visa in Romania allows people to spend 12 months in the country without the need of getting an additional permit or a different visa. The person needs to be self-employed (or work remotely) and earn three times the average salary in the country per month (an average of the previous six months is used).

With the average salary in Romania currently at around 1,100 Euros, this means that you need earnings of 3,300 Euros per month for the past three months before applying.

So this would be the short summary of the DN visa here. A bit on the upper side in terms of required monthly income (especially since the cost of living in Romania is so low), but still more affordable than in other countries. And a lot easier to get than other types of long-stay visas.

Length of stay: The Romania digital nomad visa is valid for one year. You can apply for a renewal of the nomad visa as long as you meet the initial requirements. The Romania digital nomad visa will then be valid for another year.

Visa Fee: Unknown/ as of right now, the costs for applying are very minimal. They’re not confirmed by the Romanian government but may change in the future.

Eligibility/Requirements :

  • The application needs to be done at a Romanian embassy or online. From what I have heard is that you need to apply at an embassy or consulate in the country of residency.
  • Show proof of remote work via an employment contract of the company you work for, this can be your own company which must be registered outside Romania.
  • Show proof of health insurance which has coverage for Romania.
  • Have a clean criminal record.
  • Have a place to stay in Romania.
  • Show background of company and person and show the last 6 months of income.

Required Proof of Income: Have valid proof of income for the last six months. This should be three times the Romanian average gross salary, which is around €3,700 ($4,170) per month.

Visa: Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa

Status: ACTIVE since December 2022

Description:

The Digital Nomad Visa was approved in Spain on the 23rd of December 2022. It allows you to work remotely from Spain.

Main advantages

  • Five-year residency permit. Initially on a one-year application, followed by two-year renewals up to a total of 5 years. The visa extends to the family of the main applicant.
  • Allows you to work in Spain remotely. Moreover, it encourages you to work in Spain, specifically remotely with your laptop (or desktop).
  • Allows you to legally override the 90/180-day rule that limits stay in Spain (and by extension in the Schengen Area/EU).
  • Tax breaks for the foreign employer (if it has an establishment in Spain)
  • Tax breaks for the employee (DNV applicant). This is the core advantage. It basically applies a privileged non-domiciled tax scheme to teleworkers that allows them to pay a flat tax rate of only 24% on the first €600,000 of gross annual earnings over a five-year period.

Length of stay: 1 year, renewable for 2 years more

Visa Fee: Unknown

Eligibility/Requirements :

You should keep in mind that there are two different profiles of foreigners who can obtain this permit (with slightly different requirements):

  • Employed workers whose company allows them to travel and work remotely from another country (in this case Spain)
  • Self-employed workers with several clients spread all over the world or with different sources of income derived from online activities but spread outside Spain

Hence, if you want to apply for a remote work visa in Spain:

  • The company/s for which you are currently working (or have a working relationship as a freelancer with), must be located outside of Spain
  • Incomes received by Spanish companies (or in Spain) can’t represent more than 20% of the total
  • You must demonstrate that you have been working for your company or having a freelance relationship with your clients for at least 3 months prior to your application
  • Contract with that same company for at least 1 year
  • You have two different options to demonstrate that you have sufficient experience and education to be able to complete the application. Either demonstrate 3 years of work-related experience prior to application, or to be a graduate or post-graduate from a reputable university, vocational training, and business schools of recognized prestige
  • You can’t have criminal records, nor have entry to Spain prohibited. For that, you must submit your criminal records certificate with a minimum validity of 90 days, and they must be legalized and apostilled.
  • Submit a declaration of no criminal record for the last 5 years
  • You will have to fill out the application form (you can download it here)
  • Pay the corresponding administrative fee.
  • Hire private health insurance, with full coverage throughout Spain
  • Bank certificate proving the possession of at least €25,000 for the main applicant, which is 200% of the minimum wage in Spain (and €9441 for each additional family member, 75% of the minimum salary in Spain). If the money is in a foreign bank, it will be necessary to provide a simple translation. Conversely, you can also use your salary or job contract to demonstrate the possession of these economic funds.

And, finally, we find a difference depending on whether you work for a company as an employee or are a freelancer:

  • If you have a contract with a foreign company (as an employee), it will be essential that this company has been operating for at least 1 year prior to your application. And, besides that, the company must state that your position allows remote work, and that they specifically allow you to do so
  • If you are a freelancer, you must be working for at least one company(that must be outside Spain), and it will be through the terms and conditions of your contract that the possibility to work remotely is specified

Required Proof of Income: Proving the possession of at least €25,000 for the main applicant, which is 200% of the minimum wage in Spain (and €9441 for each additional family member, 75% of the minimum salary in Spain).

In March 2021, the Saint Lucia government decided to create the “Live it Program,” which allowed tourists to stay an additional six weeks and to work remotely. The program was so successful that the government decided to change this process and allow digital nomads to receive a 12-month multiple-entry visa. The visa supports applicants interested in living in Saint Lucia while working remotely, studying, or living there as a long-term tourists. At the moment, there is currently no income requirement for this program, but you do need to list your source of funds for the trip when you apply. If you want 2-3 options lined up as a digital nomad, then Saint Lucia is a very flexible option. Unlike other Caribbean digital nomad visa programs, the application fee is very cheap, and the application is not very time-consuming. Furthermore, you will not be a tax resident while on his visa, so you will not have to worry about paying taxes on your global income.

Length of stay: Saint Lucia created at the start of 2021 the Live It program which allowed tourists an extended stay of 6 weeks and work remotely. This program has now been extended allowing visitors to embrace the island with a 12-month multiple entry visa

Country: Thailand

Visa: Thailand Digital Nomad Visa

Status: ACTIVE

Description:

As of 2022, Thailand does not currently have a digital nomad visa.

Any type of work that is being performed in Thai territory must be done through a work permit. Remote work is currently not available in Thailand and therefore foreign freelancers and self-employed workers are NOT allowed to work in Thailand.

A quick online search will show many results of foreigners’ experience and that they have in fact worked remotely or as freelancers while living in Thailand. Working in Thailand remotely as a foreigner is considered breaking the law and although many have claimed to have successfully undertaken freelance work, you are in no way advised to do the same as you might get in trouble.

Any work type that is not registered in Thailand is considered fraudulent and illegal so you must therefore make sure you recheck your choices before arriving in Thailand.

Alternatives to the Thai Digital Nomad Visa

Foreigners who are interested in working in Thailand can only do so if they acquire a Thai work permit. Some visas that you can consider if you are set on working and living in Thailand are:

Thai Work Visa

The easiest and safest way to start working in Thailand is by acquiring a Thai work visa. The work visa is valid for one year and can be easily renewed before the expiration date. It enables you to enter the Thai labor market legally as the work visa is paired with the work permit, which you can obtain when a Thai employer applies for one on your behalf. Obtaining a work permit is the number one requirement for anyone who wishes to work in Thailand.

  • Start-up entrepreneur.
  • Executive.
  • Dependent of a SMART visa holder.

The SMART visa is valid for a minimum of one year or a maximum of four years, during which you will be exempt from the work permit requirement. In order for you to keep your SMART visa, you must submit proof of a yearly payment of 10,000 Thai Baht. If your SMART visa is about to expire, you can apply for a renewal 60 days before the expiry date.

Thai Elite Visa

True to its name, the Thai Elite visa is considered a long-stay visa option for those who can pay a yearly 600,000 Thai Baht fee. This visa does not allow you to work in Thailand without acquiring an additional Thai work permit, but, you can extend your international business in Thailand. The Elite visa is valid for five years and can be extended for an additional one year. The Elite visa comes in different packages and the types  are:

  1. Elite Easy Access. Valid for five years with the chance of extension.
  2. Elite Family Excursion. Valid for ten years and for couples who can pay 800,000 Thai Baht.
